Mentioning awards in SOP?

Post by grenupet » Sun Nov 20, 2016 7:53 pm

Should one mention the awards they received (say, an award for graduating at the top of class) in the statement of purpose?
If yes, then what is a good way of including this?
"I received such and such for graduating with the best grades" just does not sound good.

I personally decided against it, opting instead to include it in my CV under the "Awards and Honors" section. In my statement of purpose I focussed almost solely on describing my research experience in detail, outlining my field of interest and goals, and my fit to the program to which I'm applying. That cannot appear anywhere else in your application (maybe your letters but you have no way of knowing), and I feel it's really crucial information. If you do have extra space in your SOP, then sure.
