GRE PHYSICS A MUST??????

Post by srivatsa91 » Sun Apr 01, 2012 11:44 am

DO ALL INSTITUTES REQUIRE A GRE IN PHYSICS COMPULSORILY FOR ADMISSION TO A GRADUATE PROGRAMME?

HOW CAN WE GAIN ENTRY INTO PERIMETER INSTITUTE,MAX PLANCK INSTITUTE ETC?

CAN I SKIP GRE PHYSICS IF A GOOD GRE SCORE,GOOD GPA AND IF I HAVE DONE A RESEARCH PROJECT UNDER A GOOD PROFESSOR?

Stop yelling at me!

True fact: every graduate institution in the United States requires at least nominal use of the lower case.

No, any school that requires the general gre will require the PGRE (which is every school in the US, and no school outside the US), as mentioned in every schools admissions website.

That is completely wrong, I don't know of any school that doesn't require the GEN GRE, but there are several that don't require the PGRE, ranked schools too. You probably won't find any in the top 25-30, maybe even top 50, but there are several schools that don't require it... Granted your chances go down because you're competing against people who do provide those scores, still it may not be required, and you still have a chance.

Yeah, fine, this is true. Actually one of those schools that doesn't require the PGRE is the one I'm currently going to (though it's highly recommended here); I'm just loathe to bring all that up to someone who won't do any of their own research....

I didn't need the GRE for a masters in education, and you don't need it to do the MA in physics at the four CUNY schools that offer it (you do need it, and the PGRE, for the NYC PHD Program)

To the OP - the schools you listed are not US schools. The GRE (General and Physics)
are tests for admission to US graduate schools (although some Canadian schools have
also adopted them). If you would like to pursue graduate education in Europe or Asia, you
will find further information about the requirements for those programs on the
department/University web sites. If you would like to pursue graduate education in the
United States, you will need to take the GRE and TOEFL for almost every program. In particular,
even if the Physics GRE is only recommended, you will need to take it and obtain a high
score if you are switching subject areas from Undergraduate to Graduate (as indicated by
your other posts).

Finally, note that it took me all of 2 seconds to google Perimeter Institute, find the application page,
scroll to the bottom, and find the statement that "The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in Physics,
although not required for the PSI Program, should be submitted if you have written this examination."
If you cannot navigate computers sufficiently to do this yourself, you may find that graduate
education (in the US or elsewhere) will be too much of a challenge.

In regards to the query about the November test date: Yes, the November test date
is fine for applications with due dates in Nov-Jan. Deadlines for international applicants
are often earlier than for domestic students since there are additional bureaucratic hurdles
within the admissions process (at our institution, for example, all international applications
must be reviewed by our office of international admissions before being considered by
the department). However, test scores often arrive after the official deadline. As long as
they arrive before the admissions committee meets (often in late December or early January),
your application will be given full consideration.
