Many International universities don't use 4.0 scale that US Universities use. How does such scales, say 10.0 CPI scale of Indian Institute of Technologies compare with to 4.0 GPA of US?

Often, departments ask you to write your GPA as it appears on your transcript, and let you explain the grading system at your home university in another statement. I think this is best when possible, because from what I have seen, US's 4 point scale is among the most generous in the world, so trying to convert directly would put you at a disadvantage.
