Applying to schools with both physics and astronomy programs

I'm a bit confused how to handle schools that have both physics and astronomy programs. I imagine, since they are or can be entirely different departments, that the admission requirements can vary greatly and so I must apply to both departments individually. Is this true? Or is there some way to only pay the application fee once and have my app sent to both departments? Any clarification would be great. Thanks in advance.

Totally depends on the school. At some places, you have to apply twice, completely independently and pay the fee twice. At others, you apply once (and pay once) and choose which department(s) to send your materials too. Usually the Graduate School's website has a FAQ that lets you know what to do in this case. Otherwise, you can contact both departments directly and find out.
