I'm interested is primarily hep-th and also gravity. Anyone have any thoughts between the two?
The particle theory group at Johns Hopkins seems to be primarily focused on phenomenology. During my visit, they stressed how much the theory and experimental group really worked together, which is apparently pretty rare. My interest is more purely theoretical, but with the LHC just about ready perhaps it would be good to stay more in touch with experiment during these next years. I also really liked one of the professors there and would be eying him as an potential advisor.
Maryland, on the other hand, is more highly ranked in practically every subfield of physics. Although I don't really see myself switching interests, I would like to sample the other fields. Furthermore, the professor I liked from JHU said that he consults the professors at UMD when he has serious gravity questions. There's also a string theorist at UMD, but he is apparently quite busy lately. The rest of the particle theory group appears to also be more focused on phenomenology.
Furthermore, while Baltimore is notorious for crime, I also hear that College Park is also not the greatest. Lastly, and least important, JHU has quite the impressive name, if that counts for anything.
Anyway, if anyone has anything to share about either of these places, it would be much appreciated.
