Mentioning other schools in applications?

I was quite surprised not to find any past threads on this:
many application forms ask for "other schools you
are applying to", is it acceptable to skip this question?
or are we expected to give the actual list?
I was wondering what the effect of this information
could be in the selection process...maybe admissionprof
has some insight on this, I do not have come to
a clear opinion.

Good point, I was also a bit confused about that question. I think they want to see if you know the quality of your profile or if you're just clueless. I think they want to see that you applied to schools which are in "your league" ... I may be wrong though ... any other opinion are welcome !

You could be right...what I am wondering about
is if they can use this info to make decisions (for
example on very similar applicants), even though
I do not clearly see how. Any ideas?

With all the information that you give them, this little piece is probably the last thing they could use to rank the applicant ... don't worry about it.

If it's optional on the application, is it in my best interests to fill it out or leave it blank?

mirage, this is the point. I think it is always optional,
and I don't know if it's better to fill it in or not.
I would like to hear someone who has been on the other
side of the process on this matter...

Good question -- I applied to 20 schools, but didn't want the schools to know how many I applied to, so I just wrote in ("please contact me to discuss"). No one contacted, and no one mentioned it, I don't think it mattered at all. Would be nice to hear from someone on the other side, though.
