I started a table of information on physics grad departments. Feel free to download and update it.
It gives you an idea of how few physics professor jobs there are compared to the number of people who get a physics phd...

Based on the 2009 profiles of this forum it seems that the PGRE score of your table are somewhat a bit low ? I mean I would expect the average physics GRE to be above 900 for some of the top schools ...

I think it would be nice if you could replace Maryland's average Physics GRE score with 828, which is explicitly given at gradschoolshopper.

Where'd you get this data? It doesn't appear to match gradschoolshopper... Are these figures from this most recent application period (for fall 2009)?

Anyone notice a rather scary statistic ? The majority of the schools listed only let in about 10% of applicants. The average percent of applicants let in is 19.7%. Ouch.

Why is that scary?

It'd be pretty interesting to see each school's percentages of international vs. domestic applicants, and their respective acceptance rates.

Actually, I wish the whole admissions process were a bit more transparent. Thanks for compiling that data though - it's a good start.

Because that is slim pickin's. I would have guessed that to be the case at the best of the best schools, but even some middle-of-the-road state schools only let in about 10% as well. I was just commenting on the selectivity of the whole process and my now mounting sense that it will be a long and painful endeavor for me.

I got a 750 and got into Cornell. Those minimum scores are not true.

Yes, but you are a female. I don't think that good schools have strict cutoffs. These are guidelines at most.

According to the gradschoolshopper.com, UW-Madison's average PGRE score is 794. http://www.aip.org/gpb/pdf_files/123.pdf

My point exactly. I know several guys here that scored lower than myself.

Interesting. When I applied, the AIP data said the average was 740. I wonder if that much change is the norm or an outlier. I'm sure that those high scores come from foreign students. Some schools, like UC Boulder release foreign and domestic scores separately. You can see what a huge difference there is, so it's important to keep that in mind for schools that lump all the scores together.

I also got into Cornell with a 750.

That just proves that you're female Bufalay. Obviously if a female is successful, it is because they are female.

It is very likely Bufalay is a female and it is very likely that female applicants are given leeway with PGRE due to their lower number in apps but the PGRE still doesnt correlate with academic success so in the end it doesnt matter other than the displacement of a few students.

It is very unlikely that Bufalay is a female.

 If Bufalay is not a female then he is certainly an experimentalist.

One of my friends told me that he wished he had been born to be an African-American female. Probably, he would have been admitted everywhere :P .

Physics departments and we dont have nearly enough statistics to form any assumption on african-american admissions that usually runs at about 0-4% with after trying to convert into how many people that is, usually means 0-1-2 students for the whole graduate program of 90-180 with Berkeley having 4 out of 239 students
