does anyone have the list of universities which do not need GRE Subject ?

I think this is an important subject. One way to discourage use of GRE scores in determining admissions is to increase submissions to schools that do not use them as one of their admissions criteria. Unfortunately, I this can only happen if all schools were considered on equal footing. Schools like Harvard will always get more applicants than they know what to do with by virtue of their fame.

Nevertheless, I think a list of non-GRE schools would be useful for excellent students that would otherwise be filtered out thanks to anomalous GRE scores.

Well I was looking at astro programs not just phyiscs, but heres a small list of what was able to ascertain.

Michigan State University- Not required but recommended
University of Georgia- Not Required at All
University of British Columbia- Not Required at all
McMaster University- Not Required at all
Clemson University- Optional
University of Victoria- Not required but recommended for non canadians
University of Missouri St. Louis- Not required

I think thats all i can remember now off the top of my head.

I really appreciate your answers. how about solid state or condense matter? is it the same as astrophysics?

solid state and condensed matter are the same thing practically. In astrophysics, depends what you want to do. Astronomy, Planetary Science or something completely different

here is the fact... nearly all schools have somebody in condensed matter... some schools only encourage the PGRE for their astro program and only a few require it for their planetary science program... it would tell us what you prefer

US schools are harder. They are more liekly to require it. For some I mentioned it is different for the physics department vs the astro dept, like Univ Britsih Columbia required for physics but not astro. However most of the US programs I mentioned are combined astro/physics programs so I believe like Georgia doesn't require it for physics or astro. But i spent a lot of time on gradschoolshopper and schools websites and its hard to find US schools that dont require it.

Your better off looking at lesser known schools or state schools from what i can tell if you want to skip the requirement.

Syracuse University, is another one. i don't think they need it at all.

As an FYI, even if a school says on their website that they require the Physics GRE, you can always call them up and ask them. A few places I called told me I should apply even if I don't have the Physics GRE score, and some of those told me that they would be fine with it only if I registered for the April test (not sure why, since acceptances go out long before that, but it works for me).

I believe the PGRE is "recommended" but not required at Syracuse.

Also, if you are interested in experimental you should look at Applied Physics departments.
A good example of one that does not require the PGRE is Cornell Applied Physics.

I figured I'd correct this in case anyone has recently been perusing this forum: UMASS Lowell is now requiring the PGRE for PhD applicants, but not for MS applicants
