Stanford Physics vs Applied Physics

I've emailed the chair at Stanford, and in her words:
"Note that at Stanford, we have very "permeable" boundaries between departments. Graduate students from Physics, AP and Engineering work with advisors in many departments, including Physics, AP, Engineering, and two departments at SLAC: Particle Physics and Astrophysics, and Photon Science."
