September 2015 pGRE Scores

Post by cwr » Sun Oct 11, 2015 7:54 pm

I thought that I would make this thread so that, once the scores are up, people have a place to talk about them, but I also wanted to ask if anyone knows whether ETS will post the scores early?

e.g. The General GRE scores seem to almost always go up earlier than the time you're told after taking the exam, and probably our exams have been graded already for a while now, so I'm just curious if they've posted the scores early in the past or if it's always on the exact day specified?

Thanks to anyone who can answer this question, and best of luck to anyone else waiting for their scores!

The scores have already been decided and probably kept in ETS's database. This I say because a few years back, you could have got your scores by phone on Saturday. Also, if you check your MYGRE account, it will show that scores are being sent today to the institutions you selected for score reporting.

But, we won't be getting the scores until at least 19 October 00:00 EST. :(

I got 800 in the 1996 exam, 850 in the 2001 exam and 900 in the 2008 exam. So, I'd been hoping for 950 in the September exam :D But, I made at least 15-16 mistakes in the actual exam, and I made sure I answered all questions - even guessed on questions I couldn't answer, because I lost a lot of marks for leaving 20 questions blank (due to lack of time) on my 2008 mock exam. So, don't have my hopes too high because of the negative marking thingy :(

Fingers crossed.

In 2011 I was able to get my score by phone on a Saturday in December (November exam). I chose to do so because it was already 8 days past the deadline for my first school (the school knew to expect a late score but wanted an unofficial score ASAP). I could not access it online until Monday morning, which I then immediately ordered a score report (I decided to apply to this school at the last minute, so it wasn't one of the four free schools). The next morning, the school informed me they received the official score report! I actually think the reports are sent electronically, not by mail, but I could be wrong.

I'm not sure that you can call anymore. I haven't been able to find a phone number anywhere that you can call for subject scores, so I think we'll just have to wait until Monday. Please tell me I'm wrong!

I haven't found one either, and I would also like to know that we're wrong (about not being able to call). Highflyer8 is right that the scores are showing as reported; mine show the scores were sent as of 10/17/15 on my MyGRE.

Eh, not looking forward to it. Doubt I was able to beat my last score, probably did slightly (or significantly) worse.

Brining my phone into a hockey match at 11 just to check midway through... It's a real pain that they wait this long to tell us. Really hope I don't have to worry about Saturday's exam... Best of luck to everyone!

Do they go up at midnight ET? That would be nice, because then I can sleep tonight...

I've been putting off working on my NSF GRFP application all day today because I'm literally just waiting for this damn score. On some level, I'll just be happy to have it in the book and done with (since I'm not sitting the exam again next weekend) good or bad.

Pretty sure the scores go up at 12:01am, according to a friend of mine who took it last semester... I really hope they do, since I've similarly been putting off application work for this

I see! Yeah, I was working rather productively on some particle physics homework until I saw this saying that they would (probably) be up in ~2 hours.

Best of luck to everyone. Let's hope this thread doesn't take a sad turn come midnight.

It is ETS's solemn promise to stifle our productivity and ruin our plans of studying physics

I'm with you guys. For some reason, after 4 years of undergrad I'm still not capable of simultaneously getting stuff done AND mentally preparing myself to see a horrible score on an exam like this. On the bright side, there is lots of alcohol to go around. Cheers! 8)

Hopefully, scores will be up in less than an hour.

I come from South Asia, so it will be 10 am Monday when they release scores. I have classes at 11 am, so came in to uni earlier just to check the scores.

I got 910 as well. Not happy with my score. Was aiming for 950+ when I was prepping for the test.

Same here. I think 910's good enough to not keep you out, but it's probably on the lower end for international applicants. Can you try it again this Saturday? I will be.

Haha no man, enjoy it! Congrats on your awesome score! Hopefully I'll be somewhere near that when I take it this time, although it seems I've pretty much saturated my limit on this damn test.

Low-70s for my 910. Attempted around 87, and pretty certain got at between 10-12 wrong. The test I took was fairly difficult, slightly harder than 2008 I thought.

I don't see the point of the PGRE test.

You learn a bunch of stuff and then when you specialise in your field of study, you find out you don't need to remember most of that stuff anyway.

920... :? EDIT: At the request of Explorer33, 87th percentile

I'm not sure how to feel because I didn't really "prepare" a reaction. I knew above 950 I would be celebrating, and below 900 I would probably be crying, so I'm just feeling sort of "meh". I'm a domestic applicant, but I wanted to apply for HEP-th and was hoping the pGRE would just be a slam-dunk to round out my application (my last practice test had me feeling a bit greedy I guess).

Congrats guys it seems you have all done well. I think anything above 900 is fabulous and should nt be complaining. Could you all post your percentile scores as well. And if you think you have an idea of your raw score add that too.

I don't know man I think that's a great score. I am from South Asia too and according to my analysis it's good enough for all the top tier universities. Are you basing your thoughs out of experience / own analysis or are you just assuming that you need 950+.

I've added my percentile above to my original comment. 920 was 87th percentile, true to the charts online.

And I know that your question was directed at highflyer8, but for me, it was both experience and sort of assuming I needed 950+. I got 950 on my last practice exam, and the test felt easier, so perhaps I got complacent or just had a bad day.

I would much rather take the 920 than the 720 I originally started at when I began my studying, but for whatever reason I was fixated on 950 after taking the exam, so falling short felt a bit disappointing. Best of luck to everyone taking the October exam!

Congratulations to all who took the test and good luck to those taking it this weekend! I received a 990, which was the 94%-tile. I answered 94 questions. I can think of one which I certainly got wrong and 2-5 more which I am uncertain about, so I guess that would put my raw score around a 90.

I also got a 990, I realized as I was walking out that I answered two questions incorrectly. I answered all of them, but given my history, there were probably at least 3-5 additional questions that I messed up with silly errors and oversights. So low 90's is probably a good estimate of the 990 cutoff

Meh I got a 720 (55%)

Very disappointing. I was scoring around 80th percentile on practice tests, and I even walked out of the test center feeling good on test day. I only have the rest of this week to study, any suggestions?

As always, the best way is to identify the specific topics which give you trouble and read the f*ck out of the corresponding chapters of Halliday & Resnick (especially examples), while making notes, and do several end of chapter problems. This is what I'll be doing this week for Optics, since that gave me a lot of trouble on the September test. If the topics that bother you are more advanced than the ones found in Resnick, read relevant books which covers them satisfactorily.
