GR8677 No. 28

Post by fera » Thu Oct 27, 2005 8:20 am

Hi,

Does anyone know how to do ques 28 on GR8677? I know that to normalise you need to integrate psi and its complex conjugate and get 1 as the answer, but I don't know how the pi's would cancel out to give 1. Many thanks.

you need to integrate over the range of phi

in this case its 0->2pi

int_0^2pi (Ae^(-i phi))(Ae^(i phi))
= int_0^2phi (A^2)=1

you get 2pi A^2=1, which means A=1/(2pi)^0.5, ANS. D

Thanks a lot, I wasn't sure about the range of integration, that makes sense now. This is a really useful forum, I'm studying by myself in Germany (I graduated from a British university but am in Germany for a year) and there is no one here to ask! Thanks again.
