==> Sticky: Physics GRE 4 Practice Tests and Solutions

Post by nathan12343 » Sat Jul 11, 2009 5:03 pm

I keep on seeing people either unaware that there are practice tests or that are unable to find them. In an effort to help people who may not have the google-foo, I'm linking them here.
Main Page
The 1986 Exam
The 1992 Exam
The 1996 Exam
The 2001 Exam

Can a mod please sticky this?

Thank you for the web-page, for the great links, for the books quoted here and all that! I had also no idea about these things for my first PGRE preparation. The only test given by ETS is not enough! so again:
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you
Great page

Wondering what would be the rating for the difficulty level of each exam on a scale of four, 4 being the toughest. We can always get an idea by the no of Qs answered right -percentile scores.Curious to know how the experts feel, so that I can arrange accordingly for my practice.

I want to take the toughest one in the middle of my preparation and leave the next toughest towards the end.

'toughest' is a judgement call, since the tests are all scaled differently. I think the '96 test is the hardest conceptually, while the '86 exam has more trick questions and tough clalculations.

Hi there.

Just tried to get the past papers at the links provided eg Stanford's links and others... On the Stanford website, the links that they give to download the PDFs directly don't seem to work - ie. my PDF reader is not able to read the PDFs...

Secondly there is another college that the Stanford page links to with the promise that all 4 papers can be downloaded from there. But when I take the link, it appears that the page no longer exists.... .

Have these unofficial sources of past papers been cracked down on in recent times? Or is the problem on my end?!

The Ohio state links all work for me... e.g. "The 1986 Exam" et al in nathan's post.

They take a while to open because the files are very large (~20Mb). The pages were scanned as images, so they are much larger in size than a text pdf.

What type of error are you getting? Maybe you just need to wait longer for it to finish opening.

Hi,
Is there any source for more recent exams?

There are just 5 practice exams that can be obtained legally. Use them wisely.

Thanks, but I still need more practicing since I am changing my major from biochemistry to physics and these five exams will not be enough
Any suggestions?

You're not supposed to LEARN the material from these practice tests, but to use them to check what you're missing. I suggest you skim Halliday and Resnick (you don't really have THAT much time left) and afterwards do at least one practice test as a diagnostic (preferably NOT the latest one). Then, check your answers and read whatever you missed for the exam, and more. Rinse and repeat with the other 4 practice tests.

Thank you
After knowing my weaknesses, are books like conquering gre physics and 3000 solved problems the best to cover my weaknesses or you suggest others?
