In Greek mythology, Pandora's box is the box carried by Pandora that contained all the evils of mankind — greed, vanity, slander, lies, envy, pining — and hope.
For a quick introduction, see the movie "Hellraiser."

yeah i feel like i identify with this guy a lot, not to mention his posts are *** hilarious. you been keeping up with the weightlifting RG? we need to be buff for all those ladies in grad school haha (i just got back from the gym). and will you be at cornell's admitted student's weekend? i'll need a workout partner for those two days.

RG, you're kind of ridiculous in a scary-possibly-sexist way, but at least you bring life to this forum. For that I commend you. Although the sort of life you bring to a physics grad school might be less commendable...

by grae313
ok, that's your opinion, and here's mine:

everyone needs to have a good time every now and then. even in grad school. RG, I'd go to grad school with you any day. as for sexism, neither I nor goodfromfar were ever upset by any of RG's posts

I do not know what i shud say, but I am only interested in nvanmeter's comment at this point and thanks for grae's good words again.

how much do you bench press nvan? Actually, i did not go to the gym for like 10 -15 days( i was not feeling good) so I am just trying to get back to my regular routine again.

zxcv: don b scared, I have not even killed an ant in my life. hehehe, and for the sexist thing, I do not know what that means. nyways, I don wanna be perfect, so no more clarification. Its kinda cool to know what people think about you though.

EDIT: nvan, which protein shake do you take? I am sick of mine which contains so much of cholesterol and I do not understand why protein shake has to come with so much cholesterol!! *** those manufacturers..

If you want protein why not just eat a lot of meat?

Perhaps I'm being too harsh. I'm reacting more to a stereotype I have in mind of physics men who make jokes about sex that would be uncomfortable in mixed company... like one of my profs last semester (my class was all men) who when some people were discussing mythological figures (in their boredom they were comparing students in the class to Gods) told us to look up Priapus. Some of you guys would have probably thought that was hilarious. I'm sure you're a fun guy, RG, I'm just not a fan of non-PC jokes... I think they often have a pernicious affect.

Do you really think physics men make sexual comments any more often than other men out there?

You seem to have a tendency to see sexism in everything, just like some people here see arrogance in everything or racism etc...

Remember this...
I'm somewhat disturbed by what seems to be unbalanced and ridiculous attitudes about relationships and women on this forum. These sorts of comments and physicists who express them are, I imagine, much of what creates an unhealthy atmosphere for female physicists.
Just have lunch with a group of construction workers... go see what they talk about...

try optimum nutrition whey, chocolate or strawberry flavor. it's 26 g whey protein each serving with pretty much nothing else and mixes very thoroughly with milk or water and tastes pretty good - it's great if you're trying to stay lean. if you feel you need to pack on some mass and don't have a problem with adding a little bodyfat in the process, try prolab N-large 2 - that *** will get you big. and once again, you like to know stats...we should make a profile page for our weightlifting stats haha. anyway, i maxed out last week at 295 on bench, which is a personal record.

by cancelled20080417
holy *** 295!
I am struggling with 165, ***, u r crazy, don be physicist! hehehe

yes I have been taking whey protein( I have tried chocolate and vanilla) but I think i will switch to prolab, I want to get big dude.
what is ur weight : I am just 175 pounds. and height : 5 feet 10 inches .

Americans are like bamboos( I am assuming you are somewhere 6' 5'') and this freaks me out. Any ways, I am going home in the summer with 4 packs and lets c what girls have to say there about me. haha

z.... don be offended with such a talk, I am not talking to a girl ( grae or goodfromfar), I am talking to nvanmeter. Its boyzzzzz talk.

I have a deep respect for women and it is not like what you think!
and getting laid thing was just for ' good fun'. I am not that bad alrite(if you think getting laid is bad)

have you seen this movie called wild boys... hahaha amazing

Some of you guys would have probably thought that was hilarious.
Not only do I think that is hilarious, I'm also delighted to learn there is a word that means "permanenly erect penis." I was able to expand my vocabulary without giving anyone any rice and all while having a good laugh.

lmao, twistor! all your guys are so funny!

this forum is really colorful, not as plain as it used to be in the past.

Yeah, in the past it was all "GRE this" and "Harvard that." We've all taken the tests, we've filled out the applications, and now there's nothing left to do but chill out and wait for the replies to come rolling in. Plus we're graduating and all the toil is finally paying off. I'd say we've earned the right to laugh at Priapus's permanently erect cock.

How is it that 4 of you are not fond of RG?

Posted: Fri Feb 08, 2008 2:02 pm
by nvanmeter
actually quite the opposite - i'm 5'8, 180. sucks being short... yeah if you want to get big, definitely try some of the N-large powder. i went from 180 to 195 by taking it (along with eating a lot of chicken) this past summer. and 165's not bad at all - they say that benching your bodyweight is the mark of a strong guy - and you're pretty close on that. keep it up and maybe we'll visit cornell's rec center when we're there (and hit on cornell's undergrads of course).

I am female, and in my opinion, this site is not female friendly. I've been reading the forum for awhile, and I really appreciate the advice on the GRE and grad school admissions, but I wish I could get the useful information without all the sexist crap.

I'm not going to get into an argument about it, but mostly I wanted to say thanks to zxcv for saying something. It gives me hope that there's a least one guy in physics who understands that "oh well, construction workers do it, so it's OK!" is not justification for sexist behavior.

Now I wish I had applied to cornell so I'd have a chance to partake in this epic event...

RG and nvanmeter meeting up... gonna be out of control!

I was always frustrated with my weight, thinner than I wanted to be. I was 5'11" and only 150... I couldn't gain anything by eating because eating too much makes ya feel full and bloated, and I sleep a lot anyway... But then I made a great discovery... milk with carnation powder... well balanced mix of carbs, protein and fat, has plenty of nutrients too... I've drank about 2 gallons of it per week for the past few months and I'm up to 170.

This discussion reminds me of my REU... they didn't give us access to the rec center... so sometimes we'd sneak in by double swiping someone else's card... one day they caught us on camera red handed... We were so embarassed... Imagine how stupid I sounded when I said "I didn't' know we couldn't do that." lol

I'm sure you tough guys could get into the cornell rec center by climing through a window or something...

I don understand the meaning of being sexist, could u plz clarify me 400nm? I am sorry if you were offended with our and esp mine posts!

but it was just a boys talk, so you can simply ignore them!
thanx

by the way welcome to the forum and plz post ur stat!

<it looks like I pissed off many people so I am deleting my comments. Sorry to every one of you who were offended and thanx to zc... for reminding me that I shud not make a thread a male locker room>

I'm glad at least that our twisted comments have prompted you to make your first post on physicsgre.com.

This thread is only for boys. so if you are female, better get out of " this thread" or hear wht we all have to say.
OK, RG, will do.

With reborn fervor...

RG, since when is this forum your locker room? Maybe if you actually kept yourself restrained to just one thread it would be okay, but you spread it all over this forum.

You make these ridiculous comments and think they're hillarious (e.g. this is a boyz thread). But maybe publicly visible forums should be co-ed and welcoming to everyone, not just the locker room crowd. Don't we aspire to set a higher standard? I hope I'm not the only man who recognizes that there are some unhealthy things about a culture of masculinity.

Let me give you a hint: hitting on women who criticize you is not welcoming. If I call you an asshole, it's not because I'm really infatuated with you, and it's insulting to suggest so just because the poster is a woman.

hey zc.... you got me wrong... its funny coz I am not what u think, I was NOT hitting on any girls on the forum. NEITHER DO I WANT TO. hahaha. I am laughing my ass of when I am writing this post. Thats crazy and funny coz I don know what made you think so. I hit on girls in my school, in the gym and I was talking to nvanmeter about hitting on undergrad at Cornell. I guess I shud not have made such comment and I am sorry for these comments.

( don be offended, but it looks like you never talk about girls, Thats good too. we shud al ways talk about Physics. plz go ahead and start and new thread and we can start talking about physics problems and also some Putnam poblems. they are really challenging problems and aspiring theorists shud give a hand to those problems too)

but zc... you sound very geeky, coz if you want to call me an asshole, then what r u afraid of, jus go ahead and call me an asshole. you have the right to hate every one you do not like. Do not be afraid of being alone. I am with you.
thanks again for reminding me the etiquette of the online forum. I appreciate it.

I can't believe anyone would accuse RG of hitting on girls on the forum... No guy, especially a stud like RG, would hit on a girl without knowing how hot she is. That's the first rule of online flirting etiquette. The second rule is to make sure she doesn't already have a toyfriend, otherwise it's a waste of time.

hahahahah, yes Quiz.

I think we should all drop this topic. I am really sory to zcvx and any other mae or female who were offended by my posts. I did not mean to show off my masculanity and HIT on girl , hahaha so funny, I guess I am going to coin a new word, ONLINE HITTING, hahahaha

Enough with humor, I am going to the gym to lift some weight. zcvx sorry again for offending you. I really did not mean to be sexist, actually Ido not even know what that means and havenot checked wikipedia yet either.

Yea, for the best interest of this forum we should change the subject. We don't want anyone to be uncomfortable here (even though it's their own fault for feeling that way.) I mean really, RG even manages to get laid the night before a final... there's no way a guy like that needs to resort to online sites, (especially a forum of 95% male physics students) to find a sweetheart...

Anyway, my advice to everyone is to avoid nitpicking people's comments. The vast majority of heated debates that take place on this forum occur because one user misinterprets or twists another's offhand words into an offensive remark and then writes a lengthy tirade against the user that leads to a bitter feud lasting days... If we simply avoid tearing up other people's random comments, and have the restraint to overlook a few words we don't like, most arguments will never get started.

Uh oh... looks like RG's approval rating is diminishing... comeon garden, please cast a vote in favor of RG

Posted: Fri Feb 08, 2008 6:30 pm
by cancelled20080417
quiz. plz don call garden again, he/she will bring another mystery on the forum and we will have to spend all our life to solve it and there wont be any time to do Physics.

I want to talk about PHYSICS ONLY now. Ok and the good news is I got few more acceptances from some good places( not great places). Now, I am waiting from Princeton, MIT, UIUC, AnnArbor, and Yale.

Wouldn't it be shorter just to list the places you didn't apply to? I think it's pretty obvious you're going to get in EVERYWHERE.

I've thought about this and I've tried to come up with something productive to say. So I'll give this a shot, even though I don't know if I'll just get laughed at again.

1. Just to clarify, I never thought RG was "hitting" on me. I was upset about the comments that this is a boys only space, and I should just get the hell off if I disagree with any of you.

2. I think this forum would be much nicer if all these polls (even the Simpsons, etc.) went on the "Physics Lounge" forum instead of the "Graduate School" forum. Though ideally it would be nice if no one made comments like RG, at least I wouldn't have to check on the threads wondering if there's any advice on grad school admissions.
