Help needed ..im loosing my passion fr Physics

Postby Nikhil J » Thu Apr 07, 2011 1:42 pm

When i was in 11th grade,it was then it started 'the drive for physics'/It was maddening!!
the passion, the feel fr Physics was just out of bounds. It was then that i decided that i wanted to pursue my career in Physics. But then people (parents and relatives) were against it,they forced me into engineering.that is one thing that i hate the most!!..and i really didnt want to do it.But then had to go into that. Now its been 1 year..im sick of it.I have lost all my health ,this year i lost around 10 kgs rapidly!..the mental state in which now i am in..i dunno what to say!.Physics was one thing that i wanted to live for, there were times when i could relate everything to physics ,each and everything.Bt now everything has changed.Although i left engineering now, just 2 weeks back but the passion for physics has been wounded. Its just not the same as before..i know it is soewhere deep down inside lurking somewhere!..but then as everyday goes by!..it becomes harder .I have started beating my self(just slaps and punches) and severe anxiety, excessive thinking, and wierd things have started!..just need to find the passion again!.What do i do?..to find the passion again?

You might have serious problems in your past which resulted in this condition of yours. I strongly think that you should have not left Engineering. Because as I guess you must have been in to Eng after your 12th grade and you can certainly change your field in to physics after your four years of Eng and then apply to US or India for your Ph.D. or M.S. This is most of the smart Eng students do. This year Satya has done that and he is going to a great school for his Physics sake. Previous year blackcat did that. Well any way Eng was just a degree. And if you're interested in USA then you need to have 4+ year degree. And since you left Eng you should apply to now Bachelors (3 yr) and then to your Masters (2 yr) and then you will be eligible to apply for your Ph.D. So it's long way ahead in either case. Since you have already in one Eng School, you should concentrate there and side wise study physics. I'm sure you will get ample amount of time for your study and love of physics.

And the second thing is that your interest in physics has not waned. It's because you're just in some adverse conditions (left eng school, peer pressure, family pressure, teachers pressure and Society pressure, sleepless nights and so on and so forth) you're just unable to concentrate properly. No body can. Seriously I mean it.

The best bet for you is go to the Eng school or get yourself admitted in Bachelors in Science program. And I guarantee you, your second problem can be solved and the first problem ( about a degree in Physics) is a matter of time and you would be laughing at your own post after 4-5 years from now.

Any thing else.

nah I disagree with this. I say keep punching yourself. If you get tired of it you can start punching other people

Well it's like we are the electrons of atoms and we obey Pauli's Exclusion Principle and thus: No two people can characteristically be same.

That was just a suggestion and He knows himself better than either of us. So he would definitely choose what would be best for him.

And anyway You can't punch yourself when the time comes.

Maybe you'd benefit from developing more of a passion for English grammar and spelling before you worry about losing anything else.

Agreed that i could have done engineering fr 4 years and then i could have gone for MS and Phd to maybe to the US,but then the thing is universities there require excellent grades along with other scores(GRE..etc).Considering lack of interest(and hatred) for engineering i dont think i'l do something great. Moreover, maths being an integral part of engineering and also the fun of doing it is just not there, here engineering colleges just teach maths for namesake and the attitude with which it is not i would rather not comment.

One more thing ,does one need to be a real genius for pursuing career in physics?
Thats what my parents have been continuously telling me.I accept im a mediocre student with above average grades and no brainiac!.and they say that with passion u wont be able to do anything.
The major thing that has been bothering me is the lost of interest in the subject. As i said before its lurking somewhere inside but then how do i rise to the same level it was 7 months ago?

This is the same as what had happened to me, except that I went ahead to finish my 4years of engineering. Let me tell you, it was very hard but I still managed to keep in touch with physics through books. I don't think I had lost my focus then. While studying for engineering, I kind of became more determined to go into physics once I had done with engineering. And now, I'm very much focussed.
About your question of revoking passion, start from square one..begin to read books on physics and NEVER QUIT!

You think yourself as blind and deaf and consider Eng some sort of Applied Physics Program. And I'm sure you'll rock then.
Sometimes the problem can be vanished if you just change your frame of reference. You understand.

You have above average grades? You have a passion for physics?

That is all it takes. You don't have to be Einstein, or Newton, or Maxwelll, Dirac, Feynmann etc. They are the exceptional geniuses that go down in history. There are multitudes of physicist in the world who share the same passion as you do. We aren't here to because we think we will be famous, we do it for the love of the game. Now obviously you can't be an idiot, but I believe most people in the world have the brain capacity to become physicist, its only that there are a select few who love physics enough to stick with it. I frequently have times when I get so bogged down I feel that I want to drop the books forever. However, that isn't fulfilling and when I come to understand, the reward is priceless. Passion, therefore, is what it takes.
